It is a species of native plant of the Amazon region, specifically from the following countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana and Brazil (states of Amazonas, Amapa, Para, Acre and Maranhao). The Açaí is a very important food in the diet of the inhabitants of the Amazon, where its consumption dates back to pre-Columbian times. Today it is grown not only in the Amazon region, but in several other Brazilian states, being introduced in the rest of the domestic market during the eighties and nineties, with changes in the mode of consumption. The Açaizeiro is very similar to Juçara Palm's (Euterpe edulis Mart.) from Atlantic Forest, differentiating by growing in strains of 3 to 25 trunks of palm and can reach some 25 metres. Basically everything can be utilized from this plant: fruit, leaves, strain, roots can be used against worms, and palm can be food and medicine anti-bleeding. It is consumed in the form of drinks, jams, jellies and ice cream. The fruit is picked up in the palm with the aid of ´Peconha´, instrument made with sheet from the Açaí Palm and tied to feet. To be consumed, the Açaí must first be in wrinkled machine itself or wrinkled hand (after remain in the water for a few time), in way that the pulp could be separate easily from the seeds. Mixed with water the juice would become a dense liquid, called wine, also known as the Açaí. The traditional way in the Amazon to take the Açaí is chilled cream with flour, cassava or tapioca. Some people prefer making a pirão with flour and eat with roast fish or shrimp. In the southeast, is much used drink the juice with sugar (much more dense than any other juice served normally) or eat with cereals. The seeds, after cleaned, are widely used to produce handcraft, when discarded, can be used as organic fertilizer for plants. In other regions of Brazil, the Açaí is prepared beating the frozen pulp with Guarana syrup, that becoming a cream similar to an ice cream, occasionally adding fruit and cereals, known also as ´Açaí in the bowl´ and become a food much appreciated by users of academies and sportsmen. According to the University of Florida (January 2006), "A Brazilian berry popular in health food contains antioxidants that destroyed cultured human cancer cells in a recent University of Florida study, one of the first to investigate the fruit’s purported benefits. Published 12 January, 2006, in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study showed extracts from Açaí (ah-SAH’-ee) berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested, said Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences."
